Ruby lights

Just finishing wiring the rear lights Ruby ARR
I have single filament on each wing.
Plus central tail and stop light.
Is this legal??

Stop lamps are not required on vehicles:

first used before 1 January 1936, OR
that do not have front and rear position lamps, OR have such lamps permanently disconnected, painted over or masked that are only used during daylight hours and not used at times of seriously reduced visibility.

Vehicles first used on or after 1 January 1971 must have 2 stop lamps, one on each side.

Vehicles first used before 1 January 1971 may be fitted with only 1 stop lamp, which can be mounted centrally or towards the offside.

Agreed Nick, the legality is one thing, but the whole point of the stop lamps is to prevent someone rear-ending you. I would be far happier in swapping the wing lamps over to stop/tail as well as the central brake lamp. I have gone LED at the rear to get the best out of what's there.

Totally agree, have stop and tail lights on rear wings and the pork pie acts as stop and tail lights and also illuminates the rear number plate. All lights are LED’s and are all very bright.

I totally agree with the safety aspect.
I would like to try and keep the period lights but not sure they would stand conversion to 2 filament?
I am also looking for additional strip to mount in the rear window.
Not sure if you can get 6 volt LEDs ?

Hi

6 volt LEDs are readily available with standard filament bulb type bases.

Be aware that some Stop/Tail LEDs use a single LED with two different feed resistors. This can cause "back feeding" issues in some systems using a mix of LEDs and filament bulbs. The fix is to use a diode in series with each feed.

On our 6-volt Ruby, the twin rear lights/brake lights are standard and very bright indeed. The rebuilt original Pork Pie is fitted with an LED light/brake-light conversion taken from a replica. I was looking for a additional light of the high level strip type.
I can only find 12 volt versions

The Ruby rear window is already small, so a strip mounted in the window might impair the view?

The central rear light is ideally situated to be seen by those behind.
