What have you done today with your Austin Seven
We took the Fabric Saloon out on Sunday and went up through Ettrick and Yarrow to look at Dryhope Tower, beside the Southern Uplands Way. Had I realised you were in Peebles we could have come over.
Our day was good, if damp. I hope your weekend was good.

Yes, our Sevens look good parked up in the paddock and all went well and we all survived the day. However, the car that attracted most of our attention is the Combs 3.8 MkII Jaguar shown in the photo parking up. An outstanding car looking for a bank to rob!! However, as Stuart Rose pointed out, it wouldn't have had those chrome wires in period.

And if anyone thinks that we can be rude about chrome wires, you should hear a bunch of three wheel or flat rad Morgan owners looking at some of the more modern products of Pickersleigh Road. They use words so rude, we have to come home and look them up on Wikipedia.

Got back yesterday from the Cumbria Run.   The start was on Tuesday in Masham, N.Yorkshire and the finish at Grange over Sands in the Lake District.   The run started in sunshine but within an hour it was raining heavily.   It cleared up for the run up to Shap and down the side of Ullswater but Kirkstone Pass was shrouded in a dark cloud.   Suffice to say that the rain was biblical, aided and abetted by a strong headwind.   My RL was down to first gear half way up and about 200 yards from the summit was cutting out and surging as the fuel level in the scuttle tank caused starvation.  I got it to limp over the summit and pulled into the layby at the Kirkstone Inn.  I was desperate for a cup of coffee and a pee.   Braving the ferocious elements I struggled to the pub only to find the doors locked.  By this time I was drenched with the water cascading off the front roof of the pub.  I then had to get a gallon of petrol out of the car, put the filler nozzle on and replenish the scuttle tank. It probably took about a minute, by which time I was like a drowned rat.  I forgot about having a pee, my trousers were so wet it wouldn't have mattered.   Back in the car I set off down the other side to Windermere.   That was when I realised that I had very little brakes, the drums were so wet.   Blinded by the powerful headlights of oncoming cars, I made it down to Windermere where there was a great deal of standing water and fountains of water were erupting from the roadside drains.  Some of the water was over a foot deep but the Austin ploughed through with no bother at all and very little water came into the car.    The drivers of the pre-war MG's didn't fair so well in the deep water, the floors were awash with water and it was coming over the bonnet tops and through the scuttle.
It was the worst weather that I have ever driven an Austin 7 in but it coped very well.   Fortunately my RL has the luxury of the optional severe weather kit (Rainex, an old towel and a wash leather)
Despite the Covid, petrol shortages, weather and the fact that most of the pubs were shut, it was a good 'do'.
Sorry I haven't any photos at the top of Kirkstone Pass.

Judging by the photograph, the rain gave the cars a good clean!

I’ve”enjoyed” many a trip like that in the old Chummystein, which went everywhere and I soon learnt that wearing my old motor cycle Barbour jacket was essential.

Another 26 miles today. Drove the seven in the rain to the monthly meet at the Punchbowl at Marton cum Grafton again today. Only other venturer was a T reg Jag from Yarm. 

Then drove to the annual meet at the Squinting Cat at Harrogate and found Graham with the traction engine in steam plus a few others in the rain. The get-together at the Squinting Cat will be there again tomorrow, Sunday.

Swapped the old front suspension friction disc assembly for a double, recently purchased from one of our cherished suppliers. Involved a lot of contortions and some re-drilling of the centre mounting bracket. I've yet to road test this so cannot tell you if the handling (Ruby) is any different, not that I was too troubled with the single friction plate's characteristics.            

The old unit looked a little playworn.

Hi Mick.

 Will be very interested in your impressions. I fitted lever hydraulics to my RP. Greatly reduced pitching on certain poor surfaces but seemed to little alter handling. The same fitted to the rear trnasformed the car and enabled broken patches, metal corrugations, shingle drifts to be encountered at terminal velocity and survive. Roll was much reduced/slowed and the associated snap oversteer, terrifying on unsealed roads. But the Ruby rear sas are more effective.

Had a busy Saturday, not necessarily with a car, more with bits

On Sunday we decided on the spur of the moment to attend a Classic car do at the Foxfield Railway. £1 a head. Nice way to spend most of the day. There were 6 Sevens (and 2 12/4's)
