What have you done today with your Austin Seven
Thanks Hugh, I think your measurement confirms my handle bit isn't long enough.

This is what I've been up to, the sticker on the nasty German made mag suggesting it was 'good' was correct. My test on the cat confirmed a good spark. On to test fit vernier and strap. All ok. Will now set valve clearances and time up.

Which way is which on the advance?  And yes I know the fan spindle and pulley are coil ones.

I accidentally gave myself a belt with the original to the engine BTH mag, corroded as it is. So 2 out of 3 mags work, not tested the third yet as it has no leads.

Starter next. See if I can get some life out of the bacon slicer. Not hopefull

The other thing I have been doing is taking out the rear interior of the grey saloon so I can get the floor sorted.

The nobby springs, overloading, and my nature to be hard on vehicles means it needs some TLC, Not the dreaded rust, simple popped seams and splits.

Worst job was wire brushing the waxoyl off the underside. Pig of a job.

Delivered it to my friendly welder this afternoon, complete with temp number plate and no rear lights. I can weld, but not metal this thin!

It promised to be a reasonably nice day today, so I took the Seven up to my friend Jim's yard near Wrexham today, so that I could sort out his books.

Later in the day I took Jim over to Cynwyd to collect a customers van, some 20 miles from the yard, much of it along the A5. He found the experience "interesting" as the car's tendency to be camber sensitive and to bump steer can be a bit disconcerting from the front passenger seat, though I think he accepted that everything was as under control as it ever is!

Hopefully these give you sufficient info.

I've measured the hole on the starter nut for the taper pin. It seems to be about 5.9mm one side and 5.6mm the other. However, the fan pulley is an ali version (reproduction?) and may not behave well with the taper pin for the holes drilled in it. That I will have to see as I offer it all up. If anyone has an original steel version they might be prepared to part with, that might be a better option..

Hugh, the handle measurements are very helpfull. Many thanks. Engine might well go on the chassis next week. Then I can compare. 

I have posted 2 taper pins. Both are 1/4 at the big end. I used the shorter one in mine, but have included a longer one just in case. 

As far as I am aware the pulley should be ali. I found a used one, buttered up the holes and wear with weld then flapwheeled the bore to fit, also filed up the holes for the pin. Not one of Austins best ideas. Looks like an afterthought.

Our friends have a 17 year old son Barney who is on his 2nd year mechanics course at Plumpton College and so I invited him to spend the day today doing a couple of jobs on the RN. We removed the petrol tap and replaced the rubber seals with cork ones that had been soaking in oil for a couple of days and then replaced the fibre washers on the carb banjo. No leaks and taps move smoothly now. Then he got down on the floor and dismantled the offside rear shock absorber and after a thorough clean replaced the friction and brass discs, spring etc. All nice and tight but offside still sags 30 mm lower than the nearside ??? Any ideas? Drive to town and along seafront brought lots of waves and smiles. Barney is now a teenage 7 lover. Great for him and the 7 future.

    That was using my spare RN starter while the bacon slicer was fixed, the bob weight is a critical item.
