but the block can warp, just the same as the head.

personally id do the head and block together, get the best seal on the gasket.

As mentioned above- do not fit a '37' head to an 1 1/8" crank engine.

Hi Tony, meant to say just skim head, and try it first before total strip of block off crankcase ?

Getting all the studs out of the block without any breaking will be a mission too. Plenty of heat,hammering and plus gas.
And a good stud removal tool.

... and the best stud removal tool in my opinion is the Bluepoint one as illustrated.
Expensive but worth the money.

I find a week in Deox C makes stud removal much easier, just protect any machined surfaces with a liberal coating of grease.
