it was sort of a convention to adopt a serious pose for photos so tthe Austin one appears more modern. My father used to pace out distance and ponder the exposure so by the time a photo was taken many looked serious. I have seen several shots of parades including for the end of WW1 where Model Ts and the like are simiilarly decorated.
