I think this is from an Austin Twelve made just before and after WW2 Bob.

A 30 VM-5 can be made to work very well on a 7 with the correct jetting Bob

It was fitted to my Ulsteroid when I bought it - I was told it was a "Nippy carb". I changed it for an SU, so it is now surplus.
Where do I find the "C" number JonE?

Thanks to Jon E's info I can now ascertain that I have a 30VM-5 C 855 A, also marked 8HP
This would appear to have been fitted to late Nippys.
Mystery resolved - unless you know better...........!!
