All modern photos, even when kept out of light, seem to degrade seriously.Yet I have family photos from the 1920s which are perfect. (Alaso dubious about text printouts. Seemto fade like old Xerox). What is recommended for prized photos?

Archival wet printing in monochrome will last at least a lifetime if done properly and stored suitably, though you might struggle to find anyone set up for it now outside of a museum / exhibition context. Colour materials are generally less permanent. I don't think inkjet has really been around long enough to find out, but I doubt it's more durable.

All my inkjet colour copies of old photographs have faded quite quickly. 

I wouldn't use inkjet on photographic paper for any long storage -l my 1900 original sepia photographs are in excellent order.
