oil is needed to lubricate the steering arm bush, the two holes in the housing are not really conducive for grease penetration so I will keep using oil.
oil up the stator tube was not a problem, nor the outer, down the tube is where it leaks out...
the design of the steering box does mean that oil is likely to leak out (bottom & side), but when I took mine apart last week I was surprised at how much was still contained in the reservoir, so not dry as I had feared, but will try to be more diligent topping up the oil in future...
