Supposed to de emphasise girth. Judging by the local supermarket a huge need here. Unfortunately track pants rule supreme. In the 1970s often saw four 18 stoners in Sunday church finery with wide hats cramed into early Toyota Starlets. Far more comical than any 1920s cartoons of Sevens.

A lot of seaside postcards feature a plum lady together with a man - along the lines of "Jack sprat would eat no fat, he wife would no lean. And so between the two of them, they licked the platter clean." Even the continentals used the joke, though, sometimes it was the other way round, as below with the first saying, "Come on, don't be silly! and the second, "Age does not protect against folly."
