I currently carry a C02 it’s bulky, but better than nothing.

Having used one in anger a 1kg dry powder one was more than adequate to put out the petrol fire on a burning Renault 4CV. It wouldn't be much use on an Australian bush fire though.

Well worth shopping around - bought mine from 'Fire Protection Shop', about half the price of some other well-known vendors.

VSCC members can get a 20% discount on a 1.75 kg extinguisher from Lifeline. £56.74 for red £74.78 for chrome.
1.75kg my be to large for some but now a requirement for VSCC events.

A standard 2kg one is usually £20 from many extinguisher specialists and is Blue Book compliant. 
The Motorsport minimum spec 1.75kg ones are always much more expensive, but only because they're an odd size.

Apparently the contents can settle and will not be correctly activated in time of need.

In the military, it is part of the daily vehicle check to shake the extinguisher.

I prefer the foam type.
I have used both dry powder and foam.
The powder extinguisher had to be shaken to make it work ( it was still in date at the time ) Austin seven starter switch fire, the switch had a bit too much oil in it and lit up when I tried to start the engine.
The foam was used on a exhaust manifold fire. ( the manifold was wrapped with fibreglass that had oil on it ) a couple of squirts and the fire was out with very little clean up required.

The responses are interesting, after my experience with a dry powder extinguisher most people responded by saying wouldn't have them in the car.
