Soldering the tank should not be too difficult Bill. If you are using a heavy duty electric soldering iron
(350 W. min) there should be no danger of ignition. Clean well and a strong acidic flux should do it.
If using gas then purge the tank with the exhaust from a running engine which will replace any oxygen with carbon monoxide.
Or if you have a mind to venture southwards bring it here and I'll do it for you with pleasure.

Hi Bill

I've just soldered my tank using an electric heat gun. As Duncan says purge the tank and use a good flux.  I use Bakers flux and remember to clean the surrounding area to bare metal.

The Cup is currently off the road as I have a steering wheel problem
 to fix, plus the petrol tank has a leak via one of the riveted and soldered
lugs that bolt it to the supporting frame .

As per previous advice I have emptied the tank , filled it with water for two days,
stood it in the sun to evaporate any remaining fumes and propose filling it
with car exhaust gas, before Neil and I attempt to run
some solder into the small gap that opened up behind the lug.

There are no little perforations , and the leaking is coming from 
a loose rivet plus the lack of solder to seal this joint.

Also started to think about the hood cover, so remounted the hood frame 
I made over the winter . Will now take templates off the frame once the hood strapping
Webbing comes later this week.

Will write up the steering wheel topic once some progress has been made. One problem
Is I need a deep dished wheel, but it needs to be splined to suit the only column
I have. Some engineering required here.

Neil discovered a rusty, probably irreparably Damaged
 Ruby steering wheel in his pile of old Austin bits.

So after soldering up my Scuttle petrol tank I
took a disc cutter to this old steering wheel and cut off the splined hub.

When the new spider casting comes back from JB Neil will
Use his lathe to machine down the splined part and then shrink 
it into a pre bored hole in the new casting plus secure the two parts 
with some grubs screws tapped in from the side of the hub.

In the meantime I’ve borrowed Neil’s Box Saloon type steering
Wheel so should he back on the road by the weekend!

Still to fix the dynamo and brake light switch though.

Why don't you simply repair your old steering wheel Bill? It could be welded and rebored or even weld in your splined insert if you prefer.

It was badly welded before I bought it
And the clamp mechanism fractured it
further. I don’t want to risk it failing when
I am driving so happier with a solid engineered
solution.

I know others have had problems with these
early wheels.

Back on stream after a long layoff on other projects Life, C19 and blocked drains

Neil has supplied an old Ruby wheel centre and is about to turn it down to insert
it as a sleeve inside an old stock repro deep dished wheel. Planning to fix it inside
the chunky hub of this wheel and fix it with loctite and two grub screws.
I may slot a bit of the spline? To help the clamp bolt? 

I also need to take out the column before fitting as I need to add a small shim 
to the steering box button To remove a bit of the slack.

The petrol tank has been repaired ( I hope) I tested it with a bottle of meths and it seems oK.

So should be back on the road again some time in June, though still to
Solve a couple of other issues , one at a time .
