I second R's comments, and would add that It is hard to get the oil properly hot unless you have been on a decent run.

Hi Ruairidh
Pretty certain the vanes were installed properly. I didn’t really register what it initially went up to as is it only a 0-10 scale I think. Plus excitement took over! I’ll adjust the gauge and watch it more carefully next time. Thanks for the offer of a loan of a gauge, I may take you up on that. Regards Bill G

Excellent news! Keep at it Bill...

Good progress, Bill.
I would be a bit concerned about the oil pressure, which should go off the scale on a 0-10psi gauge on start up. What grade oil have you put in the engine? I was told by someone knowledgable that straight 30 oil is best on a newly rebuilt engine, draining and renewing after the first few miles. Another thought is that the oil pressure relief valve ball may not be making a perfect seal. I have heard of this happening even though the ball bearing appears to be in perfect order. Radiator drain taps are always a pain, I always remove the o/s number plate bolt to lower the plate out of the way, it saves grazing your knuckles! Good to hear that you have three forward speeds and one reverse!

If you're happy that the pump vains are the correct way round, Bill, I too would be checking the relif valve ball and spring. Use a new set. Roll the new ball into its housing and, using a suitable brass drift, give it a few light taps so it settles into it seating. Fit spring and cover bolt.

Engine coming out today!! Suspect loose flywheel... After accidentally caught the throttle with my braking foot. Must get narrower shoes. In between times have started to plan a tonneau cover using Nylon sailcloth to make templates. Using a soldering iron to make temporary holes for the lift a dots. Now to try to figure out how to neatly cover the steering wheel.... Anyone with a neat tonneau, please put up a photo... I bought a big Necchi Industrial machine a few weeks back and bought a new drive belt and some piping feet for it. Planning to use old stock navy Silver Cross Pram hooding For the Tonneau, it’s a nice colour and texture and since the A7 chassis is off a Pram Hood Chummy , it’s highly appropriate! Inspired by the Great British Sewing Bee I am Looking forward to tackling the Tonneau but whether I Can graduate to a hood is another matter. Normal service will be resumed as soon as possible on this thread :-) Regards Bill

Spent the morning making tonneau templates as I was
waiting for Ruairidh to come to investigate a bad noise at the back of the engine. We had the engine out in 15 minutes. Turned out to be a slack flywheel as I had not bolted it up heavily enough. I was surprised how long a breaker bar pole, plus A clever custom clamp and Ruairidh’s considerable strength Was put into tightening the crankshaft nut. But then he noticed there was not quite enough clearance on the rear bearing cover bolts you know the ones with thinner heads that I should have bought,. As I had no flywheel puller, I phoned Neil , my Cup companion from further west in the Borders So we then had a visit to see Neil’s lwb Cup and picked up the puller, then drove back to repeat the Charles Atlas technique of tightening flywheels. Once bolted up Ruairidh dropped the engine in making it all look so easy, for some! Ruairidh also spotted that many of the cotter pins on my Cup , clutch pedal and brake levers were the wrong way round. Reversing the clutch pedal one made a big improvement to the clutch travel making gears easier to engage. As an encore he decided to also adjust my rear brakes so that the car was then driveable. Some fun was then had driving up and down our lane to check all was well. Altogether a very productive day and I am now much indebted to Ruairidh’s Expertise given so generously , particularly as it Was the first day of his family holiday! Watch this thread for some videos coming up! Lots of adjustments still needed but tomorrow will get the car insured and off SORN. Regards Bill G Aka AllAlloyCup
