Ian, it is hard to see if this is a box section. I would have thought GE would have used a laminated piece. As it appears, the grain is not clear and runs on the diagonal. I would have thought a more clear grain and running parallel with the chassis.

I must be missing something, Ian. Are you saying the valance is a box beam? I see that the vertical ash pieces, especially on the left hand side are rabbeted out and form the solid wood valance. Looking at the back of the left hand side there is no second skin that I can see. Sorry if my eyes aren't seeing the same thing you are seeing. Interesting construction in any event, especially the scuttle.
