All Alloy Cup progress
Hi Simon

1925/26 factory Austin 7’s were fitted with silencers which had an integral
Stubby tailpipe. See the page from a period Spares book.

The tail pipe exits to the side of the rear wheel, it doesn’t direct
Any oily fumes towards the tread of the NS rear tyre. I once had a 
near accident with that issue on a VW van.

The fumes might be a cause for concern if stopped in the one place with
 the engine running for too long.

In a nippy little car like the Cup I don’t plan to linger long in any
One place!

Hope you find a good routing for your own exhaust.

Hi Mike, Funnily enough you must telepathic !!!
I stuck it on temporarily and meant to check how it was positioned
In period photos and was actually doing that, just before I opened
Your unhappy response!!!

From looking at the period photos on Ruairidh’s GE
Site I can see that it needs to go at a more jaunty angle
and line up with the Head lamps( Which I cant fit as the rad shell
Is still at the platers. So I promise to put it all right for you....

Almost 25000 views of this post since August 2018 means a
lot of people are watching this build and aren’t shy at constructive advice,
which mostly I take on board.

I must see if I can recall/repost the earlier posts showing

Spent a couple of hours making nut cages to pop rivet on to the under sills. A nice, if fiddly job , but at least it was by the fireside in the comfort of the house!

Thinking I can now? Put in the prop shaft and also the gearbox ? Then the rear transmission tunnel?

Next stop : Engine in chassis next week?

First I need to get into behind the rear trim panels to make some sort of captive nut set up  on each side , for just one per side rear wing attachment screws. Or I may just glue a block of ash and make that one a coach screw fitment.


Weekend off for grand parenting duties...

I Hi Mike

I’d need to wait a while,  my new grandson is only 8 weeks old!

By the way, by tea time today the gearbox and propshaft are in!!

Fettling was required on the HardySpicer yoke as a very small amount of grinding
Needed to allow the Nyloc  nuts to bolt up, plus
The clutch pedal cotter pin hole needed reaming slightly as the
New cotter was reluctant to go through.

At this stage of the build everything seems to need
“Fitting” I now know why the best engineers to ask  were fitters,
when I worked at Barr&Stroud’s periscope factory!

I think I’ll try and fit the brake light switch while
the floors are still up.

I’ve been putting off installing the engine but it looks like it will
go in next week, but still lots to do before starting it up.

My Grandson at coming up 22 years old, can do all of those, Mike. In fact his skills are now far in excess of mine and he makes his living mending, restoring, improving and generally looking after pre-war (and some Post War) cars. He does do some work on Sevens but Rileys are his main work. He's worked on old cars with me since he was 2 years old but now that's evolved into his career and his knowledge, qualifications and experience far outweigh his age. He's already travelled Europe as well as the UK looking after customers competition cars and continues to do so. You'll find him running customers cars at VSCC Silverstone this weekend.

He's also not a bad driver and he now normally beats me when we compete together in my Ulster. That wasn't always the case but I put his performance these days down to him being 21 and me not!! VSCC Curborough on Good Friday and then the three events of the Manx Classic the following Thursday/Friday/Saturday are the first events for us in 2019 and we'll still be trying to beat each other as always. Double entering means that that will be the equivalent of 8 events in 8 days. Some cars don't do 8 events in a full season.

What could possibly go wrong Sad Sad
