What have you done today with your Austin Seven

5KW is pretty hefty. It sounds as if it’s a truck , or boat cabin heater,
Which are normally about £800 to £1000 for an Eberspacher type gadget.

That's exactly what it is Bill and the Propex one I bought for our Commer 10 years ago was not far off the price you mention - it's extraordinary value, will let you know how it goes.

Hi Ruairidh, did the Nippy crankcase in the background come with a dip stick? If it did could you post a picture with measurments, need to make a new one for the Type 65 engine.

It did not Gerry but I have another in an Export engine that I believe is the same, just longer from memory...

Thanks Ruairidh, my guess is it's about 2 inches longer and same shape as the the standard ones.

My garage has underfloor heating. Never used it. The only reason I knew I had it was during the final house inspection before buying the estate agent was confused by a thermostat on the garage wall next to a large switch. He turned it on and nothing happened. So we thought nothing of it. When I moved in the previous owner (who lives in the house in front of mine) came over to say hello and said I need to explain to you about the underfloor garage heating, it had been left on! Turns out he used to do something with speed boats and so had it installed to help dry them out. It wasn't mentioned on the chattels list since he wasn't sure it even worked and in NZ anything you list has to be in working order when you sell the house.

But I have never used it. It would take a few days to get the slab up to temp I imagine and it doesn't get cold enough here in winter to need it. The other day we hit 30C and the locals seemed to think the apocalypse had arrived. I was still a wearing wool vest to work! In the 3 years I have been here I don't think it's ever gone sub 0.

I should work out how much it would cost to run (I think it's a 2 or 2.5kW heater) and see how effective it is in winter.

It certainly gets hot here in the south of France in high summer, as our Bearded Wizard discovered when he passed here this summer. Fortunately I have air conditioning in the garage which helps to cool the air a bit, as well as a butane "super ser" heater for the winter. The air-con unit  can also double as a de-humidifier, which is helpful.

A space heater is very effective, but you need plenty of space around it for the heat to dissipate and you have to remember not to walk or stand in front of it or your pants will be on fire!

Recker's garage air conditioning was awesome - 39c outside, cool inside!  The beer was good too!

Out of curiosity I have just measured my 65's dipstick.

Protrusion below bottom of gauze ledge 5"

I think I'd leave the marking until you've got your ideal quantity in the sump and then see where you are! Gap between full and "need some" on mine is 1/2".
