Road Tests/mag. articles pre 1928?
#1
I got my hands on a Brooklands Books 'Austin 7' and was surprised there werent many magazine tests pre 1928.
Is there a summary anywhere, or can anyone add anything they have access to?

Brooklands has....

Motor - Dinghy of the road - Sept 4 1923

Motor - Sports model - 27 Jan 1925

Motor - Getting the Best out of an Austin 7 -  June 14 1927

i.e. has anyone any Light Car articles pre 1928?

TIA

I have a few Light Car Magazine articles - not really road test, I think The Autocar 1928 article is considered the first proper road test:

Light Car - The Austin Seven on the Road - December 15 1922

Light Car - Interesting Developments for 1929 - September 21 1928

Light Car - The Ever-Popular Austin Seven - December 21 1928

Light Car - Distinctive Bodies for a Popular Chassis - June 28 1929

Light Car - The Austin Range in Detail - September 27 1929

Light Car - Road Tests of 1930 models - The Austin seven - January 24 1930

Thank you very much Mike. This makes this a really useful thread. Do you think that the gap between '22 and essentially '29 is anything significant, i.e. have you trawled through VSCC library in past years and discounted any other existence, or just happened on these ones in passing, so to speak?
Not dissing your's list's goodness, but just working out where further investigation is best channelled now in that 22-29 period...

Jon, my 'collection' is just odd copies which have come my way over the years. I'm sure there will be many issues in the intervening years with similar articles - the Seven was always good for copy!

The list appears comprehensive but very few approach the extensive type of test which appeared in motor magazines in the 1950s and after, and the observations are very non critical.(1935 "The braking power is about the same as that of previous models"!) I have the two Broooklands publications; Austin Seven in the Thirties and Austin Seven Cars 1930-35. Are there more?
Whilst many now claim 50mph as quite normal many models did not acheive (or approach!) this. For anyone who has access to the lot a summary would be of interest. Many reviews are very limited so it would not be a huge task.

The books I have in the library are -

The Austin Seven & Ten: Brooklands 2009

Austin Seven 1922-1982: Brooklands 1994

Austin Seven in the Thirties: Brooklands 1970

Austin Seven Cars 1930-1935: Brooklands ~ 1975

Austin Seven Road Tests, Service Data, Road Research Reports:  Unique Motor Books ~ 2000

Pre-War Austin and Morris Cars incorporating the Austin Seven: Unique Motoring Portfolios ~ 1990

Plus photocopies of selected cuttings from Autocar, Motor and Light Car 1930-1940

Not as comprehensive as some but enough for me !

Cheers, Tony.
