I had a set of semi girdling stub axles with badly damaged core plug retaining ridges. My local machinist bored them out and threaded 20 mm metric fine (I think ) and made up some brass threaded core plugs.  They have gone together satisfactorily, but have not been tried.  Before you ask the Austin core plugs don't fit.
