Whats the vertical clearance of the rings in their grooves Malcolm? I ask because I've just had a similar experience with an engine that's only done 10,000 miles and the top ring has 0.012" vertical play and guzzled oil a sure sign of ring scuffing leaving the ring corners like razor blades whilst another car has 60,000 miles on the clock and doesn't seem to burn any oil.

Dave
I have just checked the pistons and I can get a 0.012" feeler in above the top piston rings but only if the rings are proud of the groove. Logic suggests that the rings may be tapered?
By luck I have found a tin of new old stock piston rings in my spares so I am thinking of replacing the two upper rings on each piston.

Hurrah, PWA7 Magazine arrives. Hmm, no sign of a membership card contained therein.

The PWA7C membership cards will be sent out with the June magazine. If anyone needs their membership number, it is printed with their name on the address sheet that accompanies the May mag. Or email membership@pwa7c.co.uk and John Gray will tell you.
