That's not a core plug - it's a top water branch...

I used a piece of wood broken from the roadside hedge to replace the aluminium cover on my BLIC magneto. Nothing wrong with the cover except that it was allowing the HT voltage to short to earth. Using the bit of wood in its place allowed us to compete to a First class award in the VSCC Welsh Rally, back in the days when we had to prove a 200 mile journey to the start. The mag finally gave up completely at Northampton on the way home.

I bought an ML RF4 from Australia that came with a wooden rotor arm with a brass strip screwed on. 
That wouldn't last long on this damp European island.
