Cam Follower Question ???
Can a cam follower be replaced without separating the block from the crankcase ?
Guess the valve would need to come out though ?? Huh

You will need to remove the valve, spring, collets, cup and the guide - you may be able to pull the guide up to allow enough room to remove the follower, unless the cam follower guides have been cut down.

Do you have a split follower?

I'm beginning to suspect that's the issue, the 'noise' seems to be coming from the valve train area ???
I'll get a chance to check after Xmas, when I've more time, but I've just been made aware that the cam follower guides 'may' need to be cut down a fraction if running reground followers and camshaft.

Is it perhaps possible to withdraw the followers downwards into the crankcase if the camshaft is first removed?

If it is a Cam Follower issue, and they can't be removed by Ruairidhs method, I'd rather lift the block upwards.

I have swapped out a number of can followers over the years, using the method above.

You don’t normally need to remove the block.

What's the best way to draw up the valve guides , I'm guessing draw them upwards with studding and nuts ???

You can also drift it down the way, I presume it is parallel guide, and replace it that way too.

If you have reprofiled followers you probably will have to shorten the bronze guides,and certainly if running a reprofiled cam too.The tappet locking nuts foul them before the follower reaches the cam lobe.I did make and loan a tool to cut them down in situ many years ago.

Cheers Ruairidh & Austin , looking at the 'Build Sheet' it definitely states the cam was "re-profiled" & I'm sure , but can't find any reference to the cam followers either being re-ground/replaced ???
Also, when checking the noise from the valve area I found at least one valve with a gap in excess of 0.030". It was also fitted with a Silicon block/crankcase gasket, which I guess is much thicker than the paper gasket used in the past. Currently the car is not accessible, but early in the New Year I will rearrange the workshop and check , and report my findings.
Austin inthe Shed, what did this tool look like ? as I may be able to replicate, if ??? the bronze guides are too high . Cheers.
