RN Box rebuild questions
#1
Need some advice on two areas. I took the scuttle vents off some time ago and can't remember which way round they go. When open is the front edge pointing out scooping cold air in or does the rear edge open out letting the hot air exit?

Secong question is about the scuttle rubber at the rear of the bonnet, does it stop square at the bottom of the bonnet side or does it go round following the bottom edge of the bonnet and along the wing as on a Nippy / Type 65?

Many thanks in advance for any guidance.

Hi Scarlet, Rhett here  Big Grin

The lever operating the vents should be at the top or you won’t be able to reach it and if the vent opens at the front you’ll be blown out of the window. So vent opens to the rear and lever to the top.

If the bonnet rubber is the same as the RK it stops at the top of the flitch plate. I believe there should be a small bolt holding the end of the rubber with wire ties securing the rest.

These are just my observations, others may contradict!

Cheers

Howard

This is my RM, which I would expect is similar to the RN:

From a very original RN we recommissioned, I have more photos of some very unusual features, will look them out…

Great picture Ruairidh, but no beading between the wing and the flitch?

I’m no expert, of course!

Thats not a picture of a 65 so not relevant to the second question.

Thanks for all that and the photos. Howard, your right about keeping the lever at the top but you can fit the N/S vent on the O/S and it opens the wrong way so I was just checking. Thanks for the photo David, rubber does what I thought with a clip the same as at the bottom of the rad rubbber. Having done the 65 a few years back I knew it had a curved plate at the bottom and was just checking to make sure it didn't do the same on the RN. Interesting that the cut out in the photos from David and Rory show the same orientation, mine is fitted higher up and turned through 90 degrees so I might have to change that, a bit pedantic I know.

I've got another question about the exhaust down pipe, according the the various parts books the exhaust system is the same as on earlier cars passing through the chassis cross member with only a short tailpipe exiting in front of the rear wheel. Am I right in thinking this changed in the later cars with 4 speed crash boxes, the down pipe going below the cross member and a long tail pipe right to the rear?

The 3 speed RN exhaust pipe passes through the hole in the NS end of the chassis front cross member      whilst the 4 speed exhaust passes under the end of the cross member for which the combined exhaust manifold flange orientation changed. The 3 speed tailpipe ends just behind and below the rear axle          whilst the 4 speed passes over the rear axle.
