Thanks all for the kind messages! I've barely touched the car since getting back and there's a bit of mechanical investigation still needed before I head back out on any more further afield trips. I've been eyeing up taking the ferry to Spain and driving back for a while...

Do it! I don't have experience of Spanish roads but Reckless Rat drove to Compostella from southern France a couple of years ago.

Time passes so quickly these days. It was 5 years ago as yesterday I got back!
You shouldn't have any problems, Rupert, as long as you plan your journey in advance, prepare your stops (I always use a hotel with parking) and keep away from motorways and fast dual carriageways. Rural Spain and France are much quieter than Hingerland. 150 to 200 miles a day is easily doable in an RP, more if the roads are flat.

Well Gez, My mother warned me that your life accelerates away from you as you get older. She was about the same age as I am now and I am saying the same thing to my kids.

I have to say Bruce most of my overseas trips have been 'planned' as we went along in the car, and I've only ever booked a room for the first or last night near the ferry port. I've never yet failed to find a campsite or a guest house of some sort, though I do tend to avoid busy areas in peak season. I appreciate that degree of vagueness is not for everyone, but it does free you completely from the need to be at a given point by the end of the day. When I was a little younger and even more foolish we reached Andorra from the channel in three days in the Ulster, camping at Blois and Brive-la-Gaillarde - we were pushing it a bit, but with another day in hand it should be comfortable; and as Bruce says, you may often have the road to yourself.

Not really knowing where I was going, and based on the fact that I was going to be doing about 250 miles a day, I really wanted to be sure of a decent place to bed down for the night, with a restaurant for me and secure parking for the "Tacot". Normally I would be more than happy to take a chance, but that part of Spain is not highly populated and a lot of the places I passed through were like the town in "High Plains Drifter" by Clint Eastwood, with banjo music playing in the background...
