What have you done today with your Austin Seven
Speaking of Aero engined cars. I was at our weekly "Motoring Lunch" when a Mate turned up in his Hispano Suiza rocket ship, it has a vintage Hisso chassis and a 1918 WW1 11 or 12 litre V8 engine, not sure what the gearbox but it's someting like an Albion truck box and the diff is probably out of the same vehicle but with the outer reduction gears removed so it's about 2:1 . It sounds and goes wonderfully.

"Stripping back to bare metal was not the original plan but once you start....

It all started when I found rust under the previous black paint and so decided it had to come off to see what was there.

I started with gel paint stripper (poly strip), then a pressure washer, then a combination of wire brush wheels, flap discs, scourer disks and lots of elbow grease.

When I thought it was done I cleaned it with grease and wax cleaner, then wiped over some phosphoric acid, wiped it off, then cleaned it all again. Tommorow it will get a coat of etch primer.

The main ingredient is the elbow grease!

Andrew "

Thank you, Andrew. So it's off to Screwfix for some elbow grease, if they have any in.

Regards,

Jamie.

I don't think H&S permits the sale of traditional elbow grease these days, I think you have to use the electrically powered version, which is not as effective ...

There used to be a wonderful cleaning product called "Gumption". IIRC it was made by Chemico and was basically pumice powder in a softened soap

Not really relevant but Elbow Grease and Gumption are often associated....

I've done some competition with the Ruby, but this was the first time we've been up against a Mini Cooper and a full rally spec Escort. Luckily the day was based on navigation, not speed. The Bullnose Morris  in the background was the winner. There were a couple of rallying Minis, with straight cut gears. One could hear them coming from quite a considerable distance.

I collected Mathildeux on the trailer from my auto sparks pal today. When I got back to the workshop I noticed that the elbow and initial section of exhaust had come off the manifold in transit. My own fault for not tightening it up adequately! I drove slowly back along the 8 mile route but it is nowhere to be seen, I even stopped and looked in a skip by the roadside in one of the villages I passed through but no sign of any stray pipe.
Anyone got a spare they might part with in exchange for beer tokens?
