A really big thank-you to all of the above for reading and for your replies. I will take all your comments on board. The way forward seems to be a thorough check of everything to do with the front suspension and steering, checking for tightness, and checking everything visually but without disturbing everything.
Then dismantling things starting with the drag link. Yes Stuartu, I had noticed the drag link was mentioned five times!
And yes to only changing one thing at a time, though if it only shimmies twice every 300 miles this could take a long time!
To complete the picture, the crash repair involved fitting.....
A new front spring
New spring shackles
New spring U-bolts
New steering arm from David at A7components
A second-hand axle
One second-hand radius arm
Dismantling and re-assembly of the radius arm ball mounting onto chassis
Dismantling and re-shimming the front end of the drag link.
