If you go for new levers and cams check them very carefully - we have had some dodgy new parts

Will do Tony - Thanks for the tip.

Dave,
I am almost certain that the cams you have fitted are incorrect. I can confirm this in a few days time, others may be able to do that sooner. The ball on your lever has been cut into but the cable cap and does not look safe, to me. When the cam is at rest the lever should point down and forward, your current set up looks to point straight down at rest.

Thanks Ruairidh,
It turns out that the cotters are in the wrong way round. So when some replacement parts are going in, care will be needed to ensure all is well. I will take stock then. I have completely dismantled the near-side brake today - off the car All the parts including the backplate are having a good soak in Gunk. No wonder the linings were contaminated. Obviously the adjuster and cam housing will need lubricating on rebuild. I have three quarters of a pound of Castrol PH grease on the shelf (see Pic) Is this suitable or is Copaslip better? If anyone has need of Castrol PH grease, the Vintage Bearing Company are selling shop soiled 3kg tins for £25 on eBay - free shipping. They are near Burton-on-Trent. I had a visit there last year for rear bearings and he has old stock of quality stuff, not cheap but reasonable. His premises are worth a visit as he collects Rudge Motorcycles and can be found working on restorations between sales. I am not a motorcyclist myself but they were fascinating. If you visit do phone first, especially on a nice day, as people have turned up to find him out on a run up the road. He has show stands in the Midlands and His website is worth a quick view.

The cotters on Girling brakes have the nut towards the centre of the car.
The opposite is true for Austin brakes - they have the nuts towards the outside of the car.

Oh dear - that means they were on the correct way with the nut facing back.
So how is it that the levers are not lining up correctly ????? ![]() ![]()

As mentioned earlier, I don’t think the slots for the cotter pins are machined in the correct place, on the cams you currently have. They appear to have been made incorrectly.
I can post photos later in the week if no one else can illustrate the issue before then.
