The main problem with a drop in magneto in place of a distributor is that there is a far heavier load on the drive gear system. Austin seven distributor gears will wear very rapidly if a mag is substituted.

Sounds like one step forward (battery-free ignition) and two steps back (worn gears and cracked castings). Oh well....
