FWIW David my Ulster rep ground to a halt on the E45 through Denmark a couple of years back with what I thought at the time was an ignition fault. I swapped all the ignition bits and eventually got it going, without ever knowing what caused it. The following Summer I drove down to Beaulieu and about half-way there was plagued again by a similar problem - almost as though someone kept turning off the ignition switch. The engine would die, battle on a few yards, then pick up again, only to rinse and repeat. Eventually stopped for good and we had to get RH'd home. Having swapped every single part in the ignition system, stripped the carburettor, and also replaced the SU fuel pump, I finally found a teeny blob of solder lodged in the inlet side of my fuel tap.
