Thank you everyone who contributed to the discussion!

I can confirm that the general opinion was that the bearing could go either way round. I even asked David from A7 Components to ask the supplier.
As this was the first time I had undertaken a large engine fix I was a little nervous of making an error. It turns out that the whole job was a lot easier than expected and we even took extra time to clean the oil galleys and fit new clutch linings.

The engine now runs very smoothly and started very easily. If you have seen our YouTube video of the first start after the rebuild then you will see how startled we are by it just firing straight up!

The simplicity of these little engines and availability of new parts means that even a novice like me can keep one on the road and going to shows for years to come.
