As Mike Costigan discovered after hours of relentless, brow-furrowing research, the name "Opal" was only used in catalogues for the Chrome-radiator 2-seater that overlapped the production of the next version with the cowled pressed-steel "Ruby" front. Over decades people have referred to the cowled version of the 2-seater as the "Opal" - as this matched the Ruby and Pearl of similar style names. Now, for us pedants, we know that this was incorrect.
