Tiger, If you look up EV Man on youtube he offers plenty of tips for heat pumps. There are a half dozen blogs he has done. His house is a conventional 1980s (?) building. He has installed a heat pump and has been very thorough with costs and the comparison with his previous gas boiler and he puts his humour and personality into the blog. So it can be done with good results.
I have been interested in every aspect of building a near Passivhaus bungalow and after 2 years of building and a previous year of research we should be moving into our’s before Xmas. Draught proofing is as important as insulation. Chimneys and wood burners are not a good idea for an energy efficient house.
There are architects who specialise in retrofit of buildings to increase energy efficiency so that could be an option for you.
I will not be going through the same exercise again as it has been very demanding of my time and energy nevertheless it has kept my brain working!
The heat pump grant ( the Boiler Upgrade Scheme) is £5000.
Good luck.
