Ivor, as I recall the RAF in WW2 worked with one of the petrol companies to develop a 'catalyst' which enabled our fighters to operate on the Russian front, where the available fuel was of much lower quality. I did a bit of Googling myself but never really got to the bottom of what was actually done. My uncle Charles was with the RAF squadron which delivered the first batch of Hurricanes to Murmansk, so I'd still like to know more.
