John, in my experience re-setting old springs is rarely satisfactory, if nothing else they will settle a couple of inches after fitting so you need to anticipate this in your measurements. New springs are currently available for a little more money and a good investment. The one thing you may want to check is whether you have a sports or touring axle beam; and if sports, is it genuine or a modified touring axle (as this can affect length).
