James Lees-Milne
#1
Lees-Milne was a 20C biographer, architectural historian working for the National Trust, novelist and diarist. Anything technical was completely beyond him.

His diary entry for Monday 3rd January 1942:

" ...I set out on a short tour in the very old National Trust Austin. Before I reached Princes Risborough the car practically stopped, and a rather delicious smell of rice pudding, accompanied by a curious knocking sound, came from inside. I drew up at a garage and asked what possibly could be the matter. The garage man at once said, ' You've got no water in your radiator.' I was humiliated, I am constantly being humiliated. "

As an aside, he later motored to Althorp where he had lunch with Lord Spencer consisting of poached egg, maize and cabbage. War time rations!
