Back in the automotive dark ages when we used to do such things in the shop on the regular, we were fortunate enough to have a proprietary foot operated brake rivet press (which we generally used for full brake relines), and the Ferodo thingie (which we used for single brake jobs to get the truck through its MOT equivalent). I much preferred the press over the punch as I felt it was a lot more controllable/repeatable and less chance of cracking a lining. But if you're doing your own work for yourself, there's no foreman to yell at you or angry customer to deal with so there's that...
