I found on EBay a punch for leather eyelets did the trick. It was a small punch like tool with an end that fitted in the hole in the rivet rounding it over then flattening it making a secure fixing. I used a round piece of steel bar the same diameter as the rivet head fastened in the vice to act as an anvil.
