Adjustment of petrol gauge needle

Many thanks John for such a comprehensive answer. The gauge plate is a little loose in the body and so had rotated slightly, jamming the needles travel, whether due to one big bump or just steady vibration over time I don't know! If the gauge is incorrect anyway I shall see if I can source one that's right. I'll check the Source Book.
