Hi Jon
I’m not sure how much value a “visual” check is. These gearboxes are quite robust and will work when worn. The main reason for a rebuild is noise and possibly slipping out of gear, neither can really be assessed without running or stripping the box.
I don’t think I would rely on this box as you can’t really assess the condition of the bearings or layshaft wear. Coupled with the fact that you can’t assess the selector wear without putting a top on and checking if gears select easily. It also still looks rather dirty despite your toothbrush .
I baulked at rebuilding a gearbox for a long time but when it came to it I found it quite straight forward. My advice would be to do a rebuild and put Andy Bird’s Andes gears in. Transforms the way the car runs.
Cheers
Howard
