Thanks for that thought. There was quite a loud bang from the clutch area....with an immediate loss of drive. The propshaft can be turned by hand and this in turn appears to drive the rear wheels. The gearbox is quite free and it "felt" as if there is no connection between it and the engine.
I had a similar, but silent, happening on the penultimate day of the 1998 London to Sydney Rally when we lost drive on our Cortina lotus. Because we had an LSD we assumed it was the clutch, we got to a workshop & changed the clutch...no better. Both rear wheels appeared to be "connected " but we found a half shaft had sheared at the flange & had enough contact to appear ok, but under load it did not transmit drive. We then twigged that our Quaife diff was a torque biasing type, not the older Salisbury type that if you lost a shaft would transmit drive to the unbroken wheel! We welded up our expensive perfect diff and completed the last 450miles to the finish on one wheel drive.
This 7 had a broken shaft on arrival which I replaced, the hubs/tapers were not perfect on both sides, but seemed useable.
If a shaft/key has let go can this be established without dismantling? I'm thinking that there may be enough contact to allow the car to be moved by turning the propshaft by hand similar to my Australian problem
