Sadly I am not surprised. The amount of suppliers in the heritage world who make promises and don't deliver is staggering.
I try with my business to do everything I say I will - under promise and over deliver if possible (but we don't get it right all the time).
I've lost count of the number of people I've passed work on the cars to because I'm too busy who I've told 1) If you don't have time, tell me 2) If you can't do it, tell me, 3) If you just don't want to do it tell me. To a man I've had lots of nodding and 'no problems'. All I want is a roughly accurate quote and timescale. I'm quite easy going on that point.
So Morris Engine No.1 sat an engine firm for six months (with the car in bits in a good friends workshop) before they told be 'actually we'd rather be working on Bentleys come and pick it up'. Morris Engine No.2 is still sat at another friends 4 years later after his father in law repeatedly promised to get on with white metaling it. Austin Engine No.1 is still sat in an engine chaps barn 18 months on without a whisper.......
I don't mind paying for work, I don't mind paying over the top occasionally just to get a job done. But I am quite fed up with stories like the above, they are far too common and give all a bad name.
Happily there are some very sound folk around too, they just take some finding
