If you carefully open up one of the ends of the spring slightly it will aid fitting hugely.
Best done with the back plate bolted to the axle or held in a vice, I use these type of hook tools to fit them, they very reasonably priced and I have one in every car as part of the tool kit: https://www.ebay.co.uk/p/9024229991?iid=203028083617
