From observation of my 1960s modern brake lining characeritics change for a while after a prolonged rest up in the garage in damp air. It is more than just rust on drums and discs.
Traces of oil on linings cause grabbing.
The further back is the leading edge of the shoes, the less inclined to grab. This is the effect of the bevel often recommended.
