To help you decide, 25 square mm cable will drop 0.4V per metre at 300 Amps, and 35 square mm will drop 0.3 V per metre. You'll need to add up the total length of flow and return cables. My target would be to keep the drop below 10% i.e. 0.6 V for a 6V system or 1.2 V for a 12V one.

I'm not sure about welding cable, you don't want it to be too flexible or it will need a lot of cleating.
