Chris - was using some old studs for attempting to move a kingpin. And of course the threads gave way gradually over a few tries with different pre-used studs.
Someone else said about snapping dedicated tools, so HT threaded rod was suggested as giving best chance. And easy to make up if you can find the stuff!
As Ruairidh has also added, some will NEVER come out with a puller though i.e. need for drifting with the small opening from underneath (present on all pre-girling except the taper bearing stubs... after the oilite cam bearings are removed).
