The bit of wiring you seem confused about is the earth (Negative/CB) side of the coil. This connects to the low tension terminal on the side of the distributor and connects to earth via the distributor body whenever the contact breakers are closed. The internal earth connection within these old distributors has been known to fail, so if you have no spark at the plugs it may be worth proving the earth circuit between the downstream contact breaker terminal and the engine block.
Making a permanent earth connection to the negative terminal on the coil and leaving it powered up would probably account for the heat you desribed in an earlier post.
