If shot on a 10" x 8" glass plate (or negative) the detailed captured can be astonishing. I had some 10 x 8 glass negatives from my Grandfather with one showing a group of twenty or so men. With the enlarger pointed at the wall some six or more feet away, I took a shot of just one face and printed it as a 10 x 8 - the individual hairs of his beard were clealy visibly.
