No,it's a pre engaged starter.When you press the start button the integral solenoid of the starter moves the pinion forward to engage the flywheel ring gear,at the end of the pinion travel the contacts for the motor close and the motor spins, that why it's called pre engaged, the pinion engages before it is driven by the motor
No, it's pre engaged which means the pinion engages the flywheel gear before it is driven by the motor,it also has a sprag clutch so that it can't be driven by the engine once the engine has started.
