I can't vouch for this info Phil but I don't think you're alone.

It's most certainly possible to make a local patch repair to a tank.

If it were me though I'd get a friendly radiator specialist to do any soldering; the cost of a new radiator if you mess it up considerably outweighs the investment, which ought to be modest. If you can't find anyone I can suggest a couple of names.
