Welcome to the 7 side of life.  No questions are silly.  It just means that you have come up against something you have not done before and would like to know the proper engineering way to do things or get ideas as to how to go about a job maybe with limited equipment........there are lots of ingenious people out there.
Hope Adam does not come up against too many wear problems, but sounds like his Cambridge was well put together in the first place.
