Sounds like play might be the issue here, but someone really ought to mention that timing gears were originally tolerance matched to each other, a mismatched pair could give trouble. No info here to suggest whether they are or not. There is a marking on the crankcase. I think it tends to be assumed these days that most are so worn it doesn't matter, but...
