A post -'34 D axle has a 1.125" step on the pinion shaft, which in theory can be ground off to fit the earlier ('31-'32, '32-'34) types.

Am I correct in thinking that if the D axle has non-Girling brakes, I should be OK?

Erm, not sure Alan, especially as quite a few earlier axles have been converted to Girling brakes. I'd look for the date on the casing as a start point, if it doesn't say '34 you know where you are. If it does, you may draw some tentative conclusions by poring over various lists of changes and dates, but it's still a bit of a lottery I'd say.
